Painter and Decorator in New Bradwell
Like neighbouring Wolverton, New Bradwell was built to house railway workers in the Victorian era. While much of the original housing was demolished and replaced with 1960s-70s council housing, some original Victorian terraces survive on Spencer Street. RH Painting Services understands the unique mix of period and post-war properties in New Bradwell.
The Homes of New Bradwell
New Bradwell is home to a diverse mix of properties, each with its own character and decorating needs. Here is what we see when we work across the area.
Victorian Railway Workers' Housing
Spencer Street — Conservation Area
Like Wolverton, New Bradwell was built to house railway workers. Some original Victorian terraces survive on Spencer Street — the last remaining of 204 original dwellings, saved from demolition in 1975. Red brick with slate roofs.
What we commonly find:
Same issues as Wolverton Victorian stock — multi-layer paint stripping on woodwork, lime plaster considerations, and sash window maintenance.
1960s-70s Council Housing
Replacement Estates
Much of the original Victorian housing was demolished and replaced with council housing — semis, short terraces, and some low-rise flats. Pebble-dash rendered with concrete lintels.
What we commonly find:
Pebble-dash render deterioration, concrete lintel staining, artex ceilings internally. Many ex-council properties are now privately owned — owners invest in full exterior repaints to improve kerb appeal.
1980s MKDC Additions
Newer Housing
Some newer housing on the edges, typical of the MKDC era.
What we commonly find:
Standard 1980s maintenance — timber fascias, interior updates, fence treatment.
New Bradwell Repaint Guide
Every home is different, but here are the general guidelines we give our New Bradwell customers:
Exterior masonry (rendered or painted brick)
Every 5-7 years
Depends on which direction the wall faces. South and west-facing walls weather faster. If you see chalking — a powdery residue when you rub the surface — it's time.
Exterior woodwork (fascias, soffits, window frames)
Every 3-5 years
For painted timber. Longer if you switch to a microporous system that lets moisture escape rather than trapping it under the paint film.
Interior high-traffic areas (hallways, stairs, kitchens)
Every 3-5 years
Or sooner if you've got young kids or pets. A good quality washable matt like Dulux Diamond makes a big difference to longevity.
Interior bedrooms and living rooms
Every 5-7 years
More often if you fancy a colour change.
Hand-painted kitchens
Every 8-10 years
A properly prepared and painted kitchen with specialist primers and hardwearing topcoats should last this long with normal use.
