The Homes of Wolverton

Wolverton is home to a diverse mix of properties, each with its own character and decorating needs. Here is what we see when we work across the area.

Victorian Railway Terraces

1840s-1900s — Conservation Area

Wolverton was purpose-built as a railway town from 1838 to service the London and Birmingham Railway works. The core is a tight grid of red-brick Victorian terraces — two-up two-down workers' cottages with larger foreman's houses on the ends of rows. Many sit within the Wolverton Conservation Area.

What we commonly find:

Multiple layers of old paint on woodwork (sometimes 20+ coats), requiring careful stripping. Original lime plaster internally needs breathable paints — modern vinyl emulsions trap moisture and cause damp patches and peeling. Sash windows are the biggest recurring job — timber frames swell, crack, and peel after decades of exposure.

1960s Council Redevelopment

St George's Way & Stephenson House

Wolverton Urban District Council demolished some original Victorian streets in the 1960s, replacing them with flats and houses on St George's Way, including an eleven-storey tower block. These are concrete-framed with brick cladding.

What we commonly find:

Concrete spalling and staining on balconies. Communal areas require heavy-duty coating systems. Interior finishes in these properties tend to need more frequent refreshing due to the building materials.

1970s-80s MKDC Estates

Greenleys & Stacey Bushes

Greenleys was built by Milton Keynes Development Corporation as a new housing estate with a mix of brick semis and short terraces. Stacey Bushes has housing alongside industrial units.

What we commonly find:

Standard 1980s brick-and-render with timber fascias — fascia rot at the ends where rainwater collects is the most common exterior issue. Interior updates from dated colour schemes are very popular.

2020s Regeneration

Love Wolverton

A new 115-home development replacing the failed 1970s Agora Centre, with redbrick architecture echoing the conservation area. Modern apartments and houses in three-to-four storey blocks.

What we commonly find:

As new-builds, these primarily need interior personalisation — upgrading thin developer finishes to proper two-coat systems with quality trade paints.

Wolverton Repaint Guide

Every home is different, but here are the general guidelines we give our Wolverton customers:

Exterior masonry (rendered or painted brick)

Every 5-7 years

Depends on which direction the wall faces. South and west-facing walls weather faster. If you see chalking — a powdery residue when you rub the surface — it's time.

Exterior woodwork (fascias, soffits, window frames)

Every 3-5 years

For painted timber. Longer if you switch to a microporous system that lets moisture escape rather than trapping it under the paint film.

Interior high-traffic areas (hallways, stairs, kitchens)

Every 3-5 years

Or sooner if you've got young kids or pets. A good quality washable matt like Dulux Diamond makes a big difference to longevity.

Interior bedrooms and living rooms

Every 5-7 years

More often if you fancy a colour change.

Hand-painted kitchens

Every 8-10 years

A properly prepared and painted kitchen with specialist primers and hardwearing topcoats should last this long with normal use.
