The Homes of Milton Keynes
Milton Keynes is home to a diverse mix of properties, each with its own character and decorating needs. Here is what we see when we work across the area.
New City Housing (1970s-2000s)
Grid Square Estates
Milton Keynes was designated as a new city in 1967, with most residential development occurring from the 1970s onwards. The grid square estates feature predominantly brick-built detached and semi-detached family homes with timber fascias, soffits, and pitched tile roofs.
What we commonly find:
Timber fascias and soffits are the number one exterior maintenance issue across MK — many are now 40+ years old with paint peeling and wood rot at the ends where water collects. Interior updates from dated 1980s colour schemes to contemporary palettes are consistently popular.
Historic Towns & Villages
Wolverton, Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell & More
Several historic towns predate Milton Keynes by centuries. These include Victorian railway terraces in Wolverton, Georgian coaching inns in Stony Stratford, and stone-built market town properties in Olney and Buckingham.
What we commonly find:
Period properties require specialist knowledge — breathable paints for lime plaster, careful sash window restoration, and heritage-appropriate colours in conservation areas. Multi-layer paint buildup on original woodwork needs thorough preparation.
Modern Developments (2000s-Present)
Eastern & Western Expansion Areas
Newer estates like Kingston, Broughton, and Tattenhoe Park feature modern volume housebuilder stock with brick and rendered finishes, uPVC windows, and contemporary layouts.
What we commonly find:
Developer finishes are the main issue — single thin coats of cheap trade matt that mark and scuff within a year. A proper two-coat system makes a huge difference to durability and appearance.
Milton Keynes Repaint Guide
Every home is different, but here are the general guidelines we give our Milton Keynes customers:
Exterior masonry (rendered or painted brick)
Every 5-7 years
Depends on which direction the wall faces. South and west-facing walls weather faster. If you see chalking — a powdery residue when you rub the surface — it's time.
Exterior woodwork (fascias, soffits, window frames)
Every 3-5 years
For painted timber. Longer if you switch to a microporous system that lets moisture escape rather than trapping it under the paint film.
Interior high-traffic areas (hallways, stairs, kitchens)
Every 3-5 years
Or sooner if you've got young kids or pets. A good quality washable matt like Dulux Diamond makes a big difference to longevity.
Interior bedrooms and living rooms
Every 5-7 years
More often if you fancy a colour change.
Hand-painted kitchens
Every 8-10 years
A properly prepared and painted kitchen with specialist primers and hardwearing topcoats should last this long with normal use.

Getting Around Milton Keynes
Milton Keynes is built on a grid road system — H roads run east-west, V roads run north-south. This makes getting around quick and predictable. We are based in Two Mile Ash (MK8), centrally located between the H3 and H4, giving us easy access to all parts of MK. Parking is rarely a problem on the residential grid square estates, though some older towns like Wolverton, Stony Stratford, and Newport Pagnell have tighter on-street parking. We carry permits and are happy to park further away and walk tools in when needed.
